Do I Need to Have My Aerobic Septic System Pumped?

One of the most common questions we hear from homeowners is:
“Do aerobic septic systems need to be pumped?”
The short answer is yes — eventually.
Even though aerobic systems are designed to treat wastewater more efficiently than conventional septic systems, solids still accumulate over time.
And those solids don’t magically disappear.

Why Aerobic Septic Systems Still Need Pumping
Every septic system separates waste into three basic layers:
• sludge that settles to the bottom• liquid wastewater in the middle• scum that floats to the top
The liquid moves through the treatment process, but the solids remain in the trash tank.
Over time, the sludge layer slowly builds up.
If too much sludge accumulates, it can begin moving into other parts of the system where it doesn’t belong.
What Happens If a System Isn’t
Allowing sludge to build up too much can lead to several problems.
Solids can begin reaching:
• pumps• spray lines• spray heads
When that happens, components can clog, wear out prematurely, or stop working properly.
Pumping the system when needed helps prevent solids from moving beyond the trash tank.
There Isn’t a Perfect Schedule
One of the biggest misconceptions about septic systems is that they should be pumped on a strict calendar schedule. In reality, the timing depends on several factors:
• household size• water usage• tank size• how well the system is maintained
That’s why regular inspections are important. A licensed provider "SHOULD" monitor sludge levels and recommend pumping when it becomes necessary. Coleman Aerobic measures sludge levels during each routine inspection.
Pumping Too Late (and Too Early)
Waiting too long to pump can allow solids to enter other parts of the system.
But pumping too early usually just wastes money.
The goal is to pump the system when sludge levels actually require it, not simply based on a guess. Most system manufacturers recommend pumping every 3 to 5 years.
The Bottom Line
Yes — aerobic septic systems do need to be pumped from time to time.
But the timing should be based on inspection and sludge levels, not just a date on the calendar.
When properly maintained, an aerobic system can operate efficiently for many years while quietly doing its job in the background.
And honestly, that’s exactly how septic systems prefer to operate.
