What Your System Is Trying to Tell You

That beeping box on the side of your house isn’t there for decoration.

When an aerobic septic alarm goes off, your system is trying to tell you something isn’t working the way it should. The good news is the alarm is designed to warn you before things turn into a bigger problem.

So if you hear it chirping or see a flashing light, don’t panic — but don’t ignore it either.

What the Alarm Means

An aerobic septic alarm usually indicates one of two things:

High water in the pump tank or Loss of air in the treatment system

Both conditions can affect how your septic system treats wastewater.

The alarm is there to let you know something needs attention.

Common Reasons an Aerobic Septic Alarm Goes Off

Aerator Failure

The aerator pumps oxygen into the treatment tank. If it stops working, the system can’t properly treat wastewater.

This is one of the most common causes of alarms.

High Water Level

If the pump tank fills up faster than it can pump out, the float switch will trigger the alarm.

Possible causes include:

  • a failing pump

  • clogged spray heads

  • a stuck float switch

  • excessive water use

Power Problems

Sometimes the issue is simple:

  • tripped breaker

  • unplugged aerator

  • electrical connection issue

Always check the breaker panel first.

Pump Failure

The pump moves treated water to the spray heads or disposal area. If it stops working, water begins to rise in the pump tank.

The alarm warns you before the tank overflows.

What You Should Do First

If your aerobic septic alarm goes off:

  1. Check your breaker in the control box. Make sure nothing has tripped..

  2. Reduce water use temporarily This helps prevent the tank from filling too quickly.

  3. Check your toilet. Is your toilet is running continuously or not flushing properly? Most of the time the issue is simple and happens inside the tank.If you can hear water flowing long after the flush, you could have a stuck toilet. What Is a Stuck Toilet?

  4. Call your septic service provider A technician can determine the exact cause and make repairs if needed.

What You Should Not Do

Don’t silence the alarm and forget about it.

The alarm is doing its job. To protect your sanity you can silence the alarm, BUT don't forget about it. . Ignoring it can lead to:

  • system backups

  • spray system problems

  • expensive repairs - system pumped

Catching the issue early is almost always cheaper.

The Good News

Most aerobic septic alarm issues are fixable once diagnosed. That’s why regular aerobic septic inspections and maintenance are so important.

Your system works hard every day, and like any mechanical system, it occasionally needs attention.
